I’ve been sharing about mouth-taping at night for almost a year, and every time I do, I am flooded with the same questions. Hence, this blog- is your one-stop for all things mouth-taping.

I’ve always been a nose breather, I’ve never snored and never had a cavity, and I just turned 36. When I was pregnant with Dean, I took a 250-hour sleep course (mainly on infant sleep), and we spent hours and hours on the proper way to sleep, how snoring is common but not normal, sleep apnea, tongue and lip ties, oral hygiene, etc. On the other hand, Josh WAS a mouth breather (before mouth tape), snored all the time, and has a ton of cavities and root canals (but no new ones since mouth taping). This is not medical advice, but it is super important to understand that we have seen firsthand the positive changes that mouth-taping has brought to his life.
Mouth taping does NOT cure sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, structural abnormalities, etc. You can be a mouth breather and not have sleep apnea. You can use mouth tape while using a CPAP machine. However, mouth breathing is not normal. Snoring is not normal. If you feel you have sleep apnea or any other sleep disorder, please do a sleep test. Josh has sleep apnea and uses a CPAP and also mouth tapes. He’s trained himself to be a nose breather simply by taping his mouth shut at night for the last year.
I am extremely passionate about sleep and truly believe it can help cure a lot of chronic problems not only in our country but worldwide. Oftentimes, many kids are misdiagnosed with ADD or ADHD when, in reality- they have a sleep disorder that causes them to be tired during the day, which results in a lack of focus, acting out, etc as an example. It’s not talked about enough, so I hope this blog helps clarify mouth taping, different sleep disorders, and how important it is to get quality sleep.
Mouth Taping Benefits
- Mouth Breather
- Improved Sleep Quality
- Nasal breathing can promote deeper sleep by preventing mouth breathing-related disruptions like snoring and sleep apnea
- Reduced Snoring
- Mouth taping helps keep the airway open by encouraging proper tongue posture, reducing vibrations that cause snoring
- Better Oxygenation
- Nasal breathing enhances nitric oxide production, which can improve oxygen delivery to the body
- Less Dry Mouth and Bad Breath
- Mouth breathing can lead to dry mouth, increasing bacteria growth and bad breath; taping helps maintain saliva flow
- Improved Oral Health
- Reduced mouth breathing may lower the risk of cavities, gum disease, and throat infections by preventing excessive dryness
- Potential Reduction in Sleep Apnea Symptoms
- For some, nasal breathing can help maintain airway stability, reducing mild sleep apnea occurrences
- Please note that I will always encourage everyone to get a sleep study if they have symptoms of sleep disorder (outlined below). Mouth taping may improve symptoms, but it will not treat or cure diseases
- Enhanced CO2 Tolerance
- More regulated and potentially slightly increased CO2 levels in the body, potentially improving sleep quality and overall health by optimizing the body’s natural CO2 sensitivity
- Improved Sleep Quality
- Nose Breather
- Better jaw development and improved facial aesthetics
- Encourages proper tongue posture
- When you breathe through your nose, your tongue naturally rests against the roof of your mouth, which can help shape the jaw and support proper facial development
- Prevents mouth breathing-related changes
- Chronic mouth breathing is linked to weaker jaw muscles, a recessed chin, and a longer, narrower face. Keeping the mouth closed helps maintain a stronger jaw structure
- May improve muscle tone
- Keeping your mouth closed and breathing through your nose engages facial and jaw muscles, which may help maintain a more defined jawline overtime//

Mouth Taping FAQs
- 30% off Mouth Tape and Nose Strips
- How long does it take to get used to?
- Everyone is different, but if you are consistent with it, getting used to nose breathing shouldn’t take more than a few nights. You should make a conscious effort during the day to only breathe through your nose as well
- Can I use this if I have a deviated septum?
- Yes- the tape I have linked above is breathable, so you will still be able to get airflow through it, but it will hold your mouth closed. This will allow you to get some of the benefits. I also suggest a myofascial appointment and/or ENT and/or surgery to correct the septum
- Can I still have product on my lips at night?
- Yes- I do! I apply all my lip and skin products but keep a small area of skin around my lips clear of any product. The tape I have linked above will still stick to your skin
