Bowmar Nutrition introduces: SLEEP. We have been formulating this product for almost 1.5 years (as we needed to test it at home for obvious reasons, over time). We also had about a dozen people testing the product for weeks prior to formula approval. This was one of the more difficult products to flavor as well as we wanted a calming and relaxing flavor. We wanted a product that not only helped you fall asleep faster but one that helped you stay asleep as well!
Let’s break down the product and the benefit to each ingredient:
Magnesium- a trace mineral that is responsible for over 300 processes in the body. One study confirms supplementing with magnesium, for those with insomnia, helps with sleep time, sleep efficiency, and early morning awakening.
Zinc- an essential mineral that your body does not make on its own, it also helps in keeping you asleep at night. One study compares a placebo group of ICU nurses to a control group of ICU nurses (who supplemented with zinc), sleep quality improved in the control group over several weeks.
Sodium- while we know drinking something close to bed may have you worried your bladder will wake you up in the middle of the night, we have added sodium in the form of pink Himalayan sea salt to help absorb some of the liquid consumed in the SLEEP formula. This will hopefully prevent the need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night due to the small increase in liquid 30 minutes prior to bed
Glycine- research shows oral glycine elevates serotonin, reduces symptoms of insomnia, and improves sleep quality. Other studies suggest it may help you bounce back to healthy sleep cycles after a period of disrupted sleep
L-Tryptophan- an amino acid responsible for many roles in the human body. Several studies have shown that increasing tryptophan in the diet can improve sleep by increasing melatonin
GABA- a neurotransmitter that blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain. Study finds supplementing with GABA significantly shortened sleep latency and increased the total non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep time
L-Theanine- an amino acid that helps people relax before bedtime, get to sleep more easily, and sleep more deeply. These benefits may result from the specific effects that the amino acid has on brain chemicals that play a role in sleep (study)
Lemon Balm Leaf Extract- this herb is believed to aid in sleep by acting directly on GABA receptors in the brain, delivering a mild sedative effect while stimulating the production of the “feel-good” hormone serotonin (source)
Melatonin- a hormone made by the pineal gland. If you suffer from insomnia, falling asleep, or staying asleep, it is likely you are deficient in melatonin production. This study shows supplementing with melatonin has been shown to synchronize the circadian rhythms and improve the onset, duration, and quality of sleep.
We recommend taking 1 scoop 30 minutes prior to going to bed for optimal results with 6-8oz water. Also, please note- we do not recommend this product if you are pregnant or nursing. If you are pregnant or nursing, I recommend magnesium and zinc.
