We have a HUGE pear tree at our Missouri farm near the lodge and we picked about 40lbs this weekend! I personally am not a huge fan of pears as a stand alone fruit but baked or cooked in some way- those are my jam! The first recipe I needed to make with them was slow cooker pear cider. The house smelled like fall the entire day and the drink itself was heavenly!
Ingredients
- 8 medium pears
- 1 orange- peel and pit removed
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 whole nutmeg
- 2 tsp whole cloves
- 6 cups filtered water
- 1/3 cup maple syrup
Directions
- Cut the pears and orange into quarters (seeds, peels, and stems are ok). Place fruit in the bottom of the slow cooker
- Add cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and cloves
- Add water
- Cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6-8 hours
- An hour before cider is done, use a potato masher to mash fruit
- Strain the pear cider through a fine mesh strainer, pressing on the solids to get all of the juices out
- Stir in maple syrup until it is dissolves and serve hot
- Optional: add spiced rum at this point
