We’ve been blessed to travel to some of the most unique and remote locations around the world to bow hunt. Since our first trip to Africa in 2016, we have returned six times and have spent more than six months on the dark continent. Every trip has been an adventure, and it’s becoming more remote and more wild each time. We’ve taken our young children and traveled while I was pregnant. In sharing these fantastic experiences, I am often asked for a list of things to pack for a safari. This list does NOT include anything related to archery or camera/filming. Josh packs all of that, and it’s a list that would take way too many pages of my blog. Our camera guys pack/organize all of our camera equipment. If you are traveling there to hunt- bring extras of literally everything and the ability to fix/repair your equipment in the field. This is a list of what I would bring if I were strictly going on safari (this list will also be helpful if you are going there to hunt, but again, you need a lot more than this list).
In all areas we have traveled to, they do laundry daily—another great question to have answered in order to not overpack. I used to bring everything I needed, but on our last trip, which was 35 days long, I only brought four pairs of pants because I could have them washed every day and rotate them throughout the time we were there.
If you are going to hunt, you need to ask your guide / PH/outfitter/booking agent what they recommend you to bring. Terrains, seasons, and hunting styles will all dictate what you should pack. Here’s a list of our past trip details, and based on these trips, this is the ultimate list (in my opinion):
- 2016: South Africa (Limpopo); 2.5 weeks; April (their fall); mainly blind (hide) hunting
- 2017: South Africa (Southern Cape); 2 weeks; August (their spring); spot and stalk
- 2019: Mozambique and South Africa (Western Cape); 4.5 weeks; June and July (their winter); spot and stalk
- 2021: Tanzania; 4 weeks; August (their winter); spot and stalk
- 2023: Tanzania and Uganda; 6 weeks; August and September (their winter and spring); spot and stalk
- 2024: South Africa (Kalahari Desert) and Tanzania; 5 weeks; May and June (their fall and winter); spot and stalk
